A Curse Dark as Gold by Elizabeth C. Bunce

In the 1700's, Charlotte Miller and her sister Rosie have inherited the Stirwaters Mill after their father's death. They are working hard to keep the mill running when they find out that their father mortgaged the mill for a huge sum of money. They must find a way to repay the debt. When Charlotte goes to the bank to find out about the mortgage, she meets Randall, the banker. They fall in love and eventually marry. Every time Charlotte needs money, a little old man named Jack Spinner appears and helps her. The first time, he spins straw into gold thread which she sells to get the money for the mortgage payment. The second time he weaves beautiful material from scraps that have been shredded. Each time he asks for some small token for payment. His last job, he asks for Charlotte's son William. Charlotte must find out the cause of the curse on the mill and get her son back from Jack Spinner. With the help Rosie, her boyfriend Harte, Charlotte's husband Randall, Uncle Wheeler, and other from the mill, she finds out what the curse is and manages to save the mill. This story is a take-off on the tale of Rumpelstiltskin.
