Itch (Delores Colchester) lives with her grandparents in Florida. When her grandfather dies, her grandmother sells the farm and moves to Ohio. Delores leaves her best friend behind and misses her grandfather terribly. She moves to a new school where she meets Wendy who is a champion baton twirler. Delores learns that Wendy is being abused by her mother. Her mother is forcing her to take lessons and compete. She keeps her on a very strict diet, doesn't allow friends to come to the house and beats her with a belt. When Delores discovers what is happening, she realizes that she must help Wendy. Together with her grandmother, she speaks up and tells Wendy's father the truth so that Wendy gets help. Together with her grandmother, they learn to adjust to her grandfather's death. Delores likes to collect unusual words. At the end of the book is a list of Delores's favorite words.
