Princess Academy by Shannon Hale

Miri, a young mountain girl, learns that the next princess of the kingdom is to be chosen from her small village. All of the girls that are eligible to be married must attend an Academy to learn to be a princess. The prince will come and choose one of them to become the next princess. At the Academy, the girls are treated cruelly. They compete fiercely for the prize, when they are threatened, Miri saves the day by using her quarrie talk to bring help. This is a combination old world tale, romance, fantasy, and mystery. Girls will probably enjoy it more than boys. Miri finds that being a princess is not always the best choice and through learning, anything can be accomplished.
