Alfred Brooks is a high school dropout working in a grocery store. James is his best friend. Some of James' friends break into Epstein's store where Alfred works after Alfred tells them there is money in the register. James is caught and sent to jail. The friends try to get Alfred to help them break into the store again. Alfred wants to learn to defend himself, so he goes to Donatelli's gym and learns to be a boxer. He loves running and practicing, but he doesn't have the killer instinct it takes to be a great boxer. His friend James gets hooked on drugs. Alfred decides he must help James and himself by getting James off drugs and going back to school. Three other books follow: The Brave, The Chief, Warrior Angel.
