The Boy Who Dared by Susan Campbell Bartoletti
Helmuth Hubener is a young boy growing up in Nazi Germany. At first he doesn't worry too much about Adolph Hitler, but he starts to realize that what Hitler says and what Hitler does are two different things. He talks about freedom, but takes their freedom away. He talks about peace, but makes war. When Helmuth gets a chance to listen to a shortwave radio, he starts hearing the BBC tell about the other side of the war. Eventually Helmuth starts publishing and distributing pamphlets containing the information he hears on the shortwave radio. He is caught and sentenced along with two friends who helped him. Helmuth was executed. His friends were imprisoned for five to ten years. The book is written on the last day of Helmuth's life with flashbacks as he is remembering what has happened and how he got to prison. Helmuth Hubener was a real person. The author interviewed his family and friends as she researched the book. There are pictures of them at the back of the book as well as information about the author's research. Helmuth Hubener was only seventeen, but he had the courage to tell the truth when he knew his life was in danger.
