Bloodred Sky by Anne Schraff

Jesse Garcia and four companions are heading to Mars to join MEC, the Mars Exploration Community. Just before they arrive, one of the scientists who has been on Mars for several years with a previous crew, disappears. There is no trace of him, but one of the scientists is sure that she saw huge, bird footprints in the red Mars soil. Just days after Jesse's crew arrives, Robyn, one of Jesse's crew members also disappears. In both cases the Rover is abandoned in good running order. Everyone is on alert and ready to counter an attack. A large white feather is found. Then one of the creatures actually lands on their observatory dome and communicates with Jesse. The scientists think they are being attacked, but actually, the birds have found the gold plaque sent on the Pioneer spacecrafts in the 1990s. They are studying Mars as well and are returning the two scientists that they abducted to study.
